What a chimney sweep does opravdu does
Checking the flue path is not just about "looking up". The professional procedure involves four steps according to Decree 34/2016 and standard ČSN 73 4201.
- Krok 01Visual inspection of the flue gas path
Inspection of the chimney flue, plasterwork, chimney head, fireplace and smoke chamber. Checks for cracks, excessive deposits, moisture and corrosion of the stainless steel liner.
- Krok 02Mechanical cleaning
Mechanical brushing of the flue from the fireplace to the chimney head. Collection of soot in the ash pit or through the chimney door. Draft test.
- Krok 03Leak tightness measurement and testing
For gas boilers, draft control (approx. 3-10 Pa); for solid fuels, visual inspection of joints and the flue connection. CO₂ analysis is a service procedure, not an inspection.
- Krok 04Issuing of the certificate
Inspection/cleaning report (according to Decree 34/2016) with stamp and signature. The insurance company requires it in the event of damage; without it, no payout will be made.

Four real risks that, based on experience, recur in homes without a current chimney sweep report. Each one is reason enough on its own.

Fine from the building authority
Up to 50 000 Kč for breaching Decree 34/2016 Coll. Inspections typically follow a report (from neighbours or the fire brigade after an incident).

The insurance company will not cover the damage.
In the event of a fire caused by a technical defect in the chimney, the insurance company may reduce the payout by up to 100 % if mandatory inspections have not been carried out. The argument: neglect of maintenance.

Without checking flue clearance, smoke and CO may return to the flat. The silent killer, odourless and tasteless, causes dozens of deaths annually in the Czech Republic.

How to choose a good chimney sweep
Not everyone who responds to a chimney cleaning request is a qualified technician. Six signs that help you identify a professional.

Certificate of Qualification
Issued pursuant to Section 17 of Act No. 320/2015 Coll. Request to inspect it. It is the first filter.

Liability insurance
A quality chimney sweep holds OP insurance, protecting you if a brick falls from the chimney top and injures someone.

Document with stamp and photos
After the inspection, a written report with the date, photo documentation and stamp is handed over. Without paperwork it is not an inspection.

Membership in the Chamber
ČKK (Czech Chamber of Chimney Sweeps) or the local chimney sweep guild. Look up the name in their list.

Reasonable price
If anyone offers you an inspection for 150 Kč, it is suspicious. The real price ranges from 500 to 900 Kč per chimney in a detached house.

Local area of operation

For building owners' associations and property managers
PThe chairman of the building's owners' association is responsible for ensuring that every chimney in the building has a current inspection report. An old apartment block in Prague typically has 8-24 chimney bodies, handling them individually is an administrative nightmare.

Inspection = annual visual check of the flue gas path. Cleaning = mechanical removal of soot (1-3 times a year depending on fuel). Review = comprehensive assessment upon commissioning, after replacement, following intervention or when changing fuel.

Who is authorised to carry out chimney inspections?
Only a chimney sweep with a current Certificate of Professional Competence pursuant to Section 17 of Act No. 320/2015 Coll. Without this certificate, the document is invalid and will not be accepted by the insurance company.

In the event of damage (fire, CO poisoning), insurers may reduce payouts by up to 100%. The Fire Rescue Service imposes fines of up to 25 000 Kč on individuals and 100 000 Kč on companies.
